Can you help me a solution to my aching feet?

I work in surgery and stand on my feet for my entire 8-10 hour shift. I have flat feet and when I stand my ankles roll inward. Since I have started working in surgery I have had more and more pain during normal daily activities. They even hurt in the morning when I first wake up. I have a lot of pain near the bottom of my arch just above my heel. Ive tried different insoles including Spencos. The most comfort I have gotten is from Crocs, but I still have pain after an hour or two. I have tried different athletic shoes based on rave reviews from customers, but still nothing substantial. My mom has the same problem and she has spent thousands of dollars getting special orthotic inserts made from molds of her feet. Unfortunately I can’t afford to do that right now so I need to find a temporary solution. If anyone has shoes or inserts that have given them relief…I would love to hear about it. I love what I do but the pain in my feet is becoming a major nuisance. Please help!

Mel, I am a Pedorthist ( feet specialist and orthotic maker) and I’ve worked with a significant number of nurses and other professionals who work on their feet all day. I won’t get into all of the issues that this can cause people but let me say that your problems are solveable and can be done without the significant expense of custom made orthotics. I make orthotics and most of my patients got relief not from orthotics but from the good firm arch supports that are avaiable (generally about $35.00) There is a great web site: www.360footcare.com. They have Pedorthist who interact with patients/customers like you who have questions. Go to their contact link then to their youtube page to see their discussion on feet problems. They are still in the process of getting their interactive features up and running so until then you should email them and one of their Pedorthist will respond to your questions. Products like Spenco generally are not firm enough to shift and even out your body weight over your feet. Shoes like Crocs can give temporary relief but once again they do not have significant enough arch support to redistribute weight. Your waking up to feet pain could be the beginnings of plantar faciitis, a very common foot problem but one that will get progressively worse if you do not deal with it. I am absolutely confident that you can get the type of relief that you are looking for but it will likely come from having the correct shoe and arch support. 360 Foot Care has a history of dealing with this problem and works with many hospitals and professionals including doctors and nurses etc. Good luck.
